Chorister Robin bird art – oil pastels on paper
This drawing of the Chorister Robin brings back memories of my childhood. I grew up in a small mining administration town called Ndola, in Zambia, southern Africa. When I was growing up, we lived in a small holding area just a few kilometres outside of town. The majority of the plots were large, between 5 and 20 acres, accessed by a quiet, pot hole laden road. We often played a game to count each second between hearing cars passing on the road. This would often be 15 minutes or more. The stillness between each car was only broken by the sounds of nature: insects humming, birds chirping, leaves rustling in the breeze.
My mother has always been passionate about gardening. Her love shone through from our beautiful, plush garden. It was like having our own private wilderness. We had a rustic metal bird bath in the garden where several species of indigenous and migratory birds would visit, drink and flutter wings while bathing. Perhaps they felt protected in this serene place. This truly was where my love for creating bird art began.
The Chorister Robin is indigenous to South Africa and Swaziland. Although this bird is not found in Zambia, I chose to draw it as I love the various shades of orange in it’s feathers and the distinctive black mask covering it’s eyes. The deep, bright pigments of oil pastels were perfect to use in this instance.
“If I paint a wild horse, you might not see the horse… but surely you will see the wildness!”
